Band is offered for students in grades 4-8. We also offer a co-curricular Jazz Band. Students each get a 30-minute lesson time in a small group session or with our brass specialist. Students will also have at least one 30-minute rehearsal each week. Students perform several times during the year, including our Christmas and Spring concerts. In addition, students are encouraged to provide music ministry at Mass. Advanced students partake in solo/ensemble contests and honor band.
Drama Club is an after-school activity for all students in grades K-8. Students meet 2 times a week to learn basics of theater and prepare a play with Ashland Productions. Students take leadership roles in acting, tech, and costume creation. Students collaborate to take a show from scratch to performance.
Youth Choir is a co-curricular activity. Students in grades 4-8 meet once a week throughout the school year. Multiple performance opportunities are given, including Christmas and Spring concerts, and School and Parish Masses. Students will perform National Anthem annually at a nearby high school. Students learn how to work together and learn different styles of music and vocal techniques.
Student Council is made up of elected members from each grade, 5th-8th Grade. Meetings are held twice a month before school, and elected officers and representatives must be able to attend meetings. Officers and members also serve on various community committees, school committees and task forces. Student Council-sponsored activities include student donations to charitable organizations, student social activities, and the annual Talent Show.
Eighth grade students have the opportunity to help with the layout of the school yearbook under the guidance of a teacher advisory staff. Students work together to create collage photo pages, class pages, and an "Eighth Grade through the Years" page. Students are also involved in editing. Those wanting to participate in development of the yearbook will need to attend meetings either before or after school.
Transfiguration has a "buddy system" or peer mentoring program to foster community, enhance social-emotional learning, and provide support for students. We pair our younger students in Pre-K through 2nd grade with our older students in our middle school. Buddies participate in various activities together throughout the school year.
Buddy System activities include:
Attending and sitting together at Mass: The older students can model proper Mass behavior.
Reading together: This helps younger students with literacy skills, and older students gain confidence in their mentoring abilities.
Crafts and activities: Buddies can engage in shared projects or games.
Community outreach projects: Working together on projects like the Christmas Box project can build a sense of shared responsibility.
Simply spending time together: Having monthly check-ins or quick interactions in the hallway can strengthen the bond between buddies.
Benefits of Buddy Systems:
Enhanced Community: The buddy system creates a sense of belonging and connection between different grade levels, bridging the gap between younger and older students.
Social and Emotional Growth: Buddy programs provide opportunities for students to develop essential social skills, such as communication, empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution. Older students can also model healthy emotional regulation.
Leadership Development: Older students act as mentors and role models, building their leadership skills and fostering responsibility.
Academic Support: Older buddies can assist younger students with reading, homework, and other academic tasks, strengthening both groups' learning.
Increased Confidence: Both older and younger students gain confidence through the program – younger students feel more secure and supported, while older students develop self-esteem in their mentoring roles.
